When reading this section of our book I found that the
commentary on the blend of graphic design and advertising very interesting. Especially
when speaking about magazine covers, saying “Designed work has no place in a
magazine’s face. A design is a harmony of elements. A cover is a statement.” P 125.
I think that concept is interesting but dated. I think that designed work and
the blend of different mediums can and is considered design as a form of art.
As someone in advertising I think that art and design go hand in hand. The communication
that is required for corporate visual design does ask more of the layout and
design required to promote the information needed. I liked the definition of
the corporate image as “the total impression a company makes on the public
through it products, is policies, its actions and its advertising effort.” P 126
The example of the CBS eye and logo I think is the high standard of branding
and corporate image. I also think the idea of eye tracking for visual advertisements
is something that is super interesting and still used today. I think that’s proof
that design and art and advertisements all work together to create meaningful
content. The reading mentions how the only thing that differentiates one
product from another is how it’s perceived by customers. Perception can be
changed by visuals like logos and color pallets that may affect how consumers
feel about a product.

I totally agree with you that design and art go hand in hand. I think it is interesting when design is used specifically for advertising and for attracting a consumer to a product or idea, because it can become a little difficult to decide how much creativity/art is necessary. Sometimes people think that the less "artsy" elements that there are in a design is better because they feel that art is too distracting and that there is not enough focus on the message/advertisement. Especially as our world modernizes and logos and ads get more and more simplistic, the designs and art will get more simplistic too. This balancing act between design and art is interesting but I strongly believe both are necessary elements to creating a good advertisement.
