Week 3 Class Post–Paige Hall-Petry

From what we have discussed in class today, I am fascinated by the centuries old lithographic print. It is so amazing to me what was done using the process because a lot of the posters that we viewed were extremely intricate. I have made lithographic prints before and the process was extremely difficult and time consuming. The process includes a lot of different materials (that are not cheap) and a lot of time. It amazes me that in the late 19th and early 20th century this was the main form of graphic art and design. Without the same technology we have now, it is impressive to see the ability of these designers to practically and realistically represent colors through the CMYK process, register prints, create type etc. I appreciated the slide that shows the limestone blocks for the "Smoke Show" print next to the very detailed print with a large color range. Process is emphasized in my own designs, and I would be interested in discussing the process of different art/design periods and how they represented the time and changed throughout the ages.

  1. Great observation. The speed that we can create images now is so different from the past. It is an interesting research topic to consider how this effects the final outcome and the process and understanding of the creators and their observations of other's production.
