Blog post week 2 The avant garde and the origins of modernism

What really stuck with me about this weeks reading was the quote from Mallarme when, in talking about Un Coup de Des, "I have in many ways not pushed in far enough forward to shock, yet far enough to open peoples eyes"
I like this quote because especially in the context of the beginning of an art movement this artist saw the importance of not pushing the boundary too far or all the way to its extreme. He had to slowly break the rules. enough to get noticed and to make people think about the conventions of the media, but not too much to turn people off. This was important for the furthering of the movement and allowed other artists room to experiment themselves. This style of prose experimentation reminds me of e.e  Cummings' concrete poetry.
this type of experimental poetry then leads to the emergence of the Language poets such as Bruce Andrews in the 60's and 70's. They continued this fascination with manipulating the ways in which we experience type on a page and how that changes the reader's experience with those words.
