Event Post
For my event, I went to Scott Starret's presentation on The Emerging Importance of Technology & Design in Democracy. It was pretty interesting, He talked a lot about different presidential candidates design styles for their campaigns. One of the main ones he brought up was obviously the Obama HOPE poster and how unique it's design was. Not only that, but he also brought up the story about the lawsuit that we talked about in class. Another campaign they brought up was Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford's campaigns. It was kind of cool to see the distinct differences between these campaigns, and why Carter ultimately won. As opposed to the typical red white and blue that most candidates used are still using to this day, Jimmy Carter’s campaign design team made his posters and propaganda a color scheme of white and green with simple, yet bold lettering. And it was this unique design choice that was a major factor in Carter getting elected in the 1976 United States Presidential Election. Finally, he talked a lot about current trends in today's presidential ad campaigns, and how they have all defaulted to the same red, white, and blue style that has been proven to work for centuries Overall I thought it was a very good presentation, and it gave me some good insight into the designs that are used in today's presidential campaigns and previous ones. Getting a chance to hear about these posters and ads was really neat and I hope to go to more in the future.
