Back then in times of war you’ll often find that propaganda was the main way to rally troops for each opposing side.  When the media was much more physical and less diluted by having too many providers propaganda proved mighty effective, sometimes a little too effective.  With the ultimate goal of dehumanizing the opposing side you’ll get interesting takes on how some may see a force opposite to their own.

Case and point, take this Anti-Japanese poster from World War II.  This is by far one of the worst representations of a person of Japanese descent, far from resembling anything remotely human; and that is the point.  From the mongoloid teeth, pointed ears, and funky hair style to the short almost impish like demeanor, bloody dagger, and swastika on his rump everything in this picture is against the Japanese.  And it is done so with such malice it is deplorable. Guess you had to become a monster to know what one looks like.

Another picture within the same subject matter would be this one.  Created by the Works Progress Administration during World War II, this picture takes the same principle as the previous pic where the goal is dehumanization.  Only this time the approach is a bit “cleaner” I guess. Instead of some subhuman creatures they use a snake instead. Provided this snake has some stereotypically big teeth.

This last piece Glenn was created by Grohe.  It’s very simply titled He’s Watching You and it was made for the US Office for Emergency Management.  It was an early wartime piece of propaganda and I think it does well to imposed a sense of fear within the American public in order to gather troops.

  1. I agree with your point on how the first poster is patronizing the Japanese and portraying them in a dehumanizing way. To me, the Japanese soldier looks like a supernatural elf from Skyrim with its pointy ears and sharp teeth. The teeth of the soldier stood out to me because I think it it is effective in conveying the soldier as ruthless and savage-like. Your third poster is interesting because it incites fear in the U.S. which juxtaposes the other posters because they are poking fun at the Japanese.
