Lecture Post 2

I’m glad we revisited the topic of posters today, but I feel as though I would have liked to see less contemporary examples. I think it’s important to talk about posters that are more modern, but it felt like the discussion went a little too long. I’m glad we’re talking a bit more about Heartfield. I enjoy critiquing the posters, because it helps me understand what is effective about a certain style of design.

One of the pieces that really caught my eye during the reading was Alphonse Mucha's Job  cigarette papers advertisement. There was something very intriguing about the way he created a background texture using an element from the foreground. "JOB" is written in big letters at the very top of the poster and its accented by "job" written in little letters evenly throughout the background. I think it does a good job at creating an interesting composition while maintaining the central focus around the brand. The big "JOB" flows on top of a large ring where a woman sits. I think the overall shape of the illustration was executed very well because of its emphasis on curves. Blog Post 4

For the first photo that I chose I was drawn to the work of Pearce Marchbank. When I saw it in the book I was intrigued by the collaging of images. I think it is interesting the way that the designer chose to lay the text over the image on the right. It gives it an interesting effect as well as keeps the focus on the main image of Mick Jagger. I enjoy the simplicity of the color scheme as well in this design. Most of all I like the parallel of the poses of Mick Jagger and the women, it gives the page a very symmetrical feel to it. I looked at some of the other work done by Marchbank on his website for Oz and I think he is a really creative designer who plays with really fun imagery, text, colors, and shape to create very interesting and fun page layouts. 2/5 in class reflection

I liked learning a bit of back story on Bert Stern. I like learning a more in depth about a designers history. Its interesting to see where these designers are coming from however, I know that the time frame of this class doesn't really allow for too much of that. I didn't really like watching the ted talk at the beginning because, while the message is good, this is the fourth class I have had to watch that talk in.
